I’m a big fan of Ian Visits: London Events Listings Guide for finding out about some of the more obscure events going on. Ian is an excellent curator with impecable taste in cultural events, and frequently lists guest lectures, guided walks, tours and other events that you may not hear about anywhere else.
For conferences, our service Lanyrd has strong crowdsourced listings in London for conferences and other professional events, especially around more technology-related topics. Try this page: Conferences and eventst in London | Lanyrd—but you can also filter by topic, e.g. Startup conferences and events in London
