Microsoft backs long life for IE6. Oh FFS... “The software giant said it would support IE6 until 2014—four years beyond the original deadline.”

Why 2014?
Unfortunately, the article does not mention any specific reason why Microsoft chose 2014 as the date. Based on the reasons they provide for extending the date by four years, it is unclear what would happen to encourage users to upgrade.
IE6 get the same extension than windows XP I guess.
Maybe it is time for the web development community to really step up the 'you need to upgrade' message on their sites?

"You need to upgrade" messages are very irritating for people who don't have the choice. The most likely outcome is resentment toward your site. A simple reminder that choosing a different browser will make the site work better is probably OK, but you don't want to be obnoxious about it.

I put up one of those messages on my most popular site a while back.
The only feedback I ever received was just that -- "I can't upgrade because corporate IE forces me to use IE6 because our ancient intranet application only works with it."
I was able to point a few at things such as Portable Firefox, but that isn't doable for some, or could get others into serious trouble.
Upon reflection, is it bad that my own employer's intranet application "requires" Firefox, Webkit, or Opera? I'm a bad developer. :(
