Simon Willison’s Weblog

Opera 9.5 alpha, Kestrel, released. “With history search, Opera creates a full-text index of each and every page you visit, and when you go to the address bar, you can simply start entering words you know have been on pages you’ve visited before, and items matching your search show up.” I just tried this; it’s magic. I’m switching back to Opera from Camino.

  1. I feel compelled to point out that OmniWeb has had this for three years.

  2. I didn't know that; should probably take another look at OmniWeb some time.

In the mean-time though I've just found another Opera 9.5 feature that has me jumping for joy. I've always hated those "do you want me to remember this password?" dialogues that browsers throw up - I usually end up saying "not now" because I'm never certain if I entered the right password or not. That feature in Opera 9.5 is non-blocking - while showing the question, the page in the background is still loading, which means that if you wait an extra second or two you can see if you got the password right or not. That solves a problem I've been complaining about for literally years.

  3. I know that it's in the name of stability and speed that Opera doesn't support extensions, but that's too bad because there are two features that hold me back from being willing to use Opera: subscriptions to lists of ad blocking filters (like in Adblock Plus), and referer stealthing (not disabling, just automatic mangling like in RefControl).

Which is too bad, because I'd love to be able to just use Firefox for development stuff (I could even reinstall Firebug if I wasn't using Firefox for day-to-day browsing -- it just doesn't work on dial-up since it locks up the entire browser whenever a page with an error is downloading, which can take 10-15 seconds sometimes -- and when you block google-analytics.com and urchin.js, lots of pages have errors).

  4. I'm on Ubuntu (Gutsy Gibbon) and Opera 9.5 has some font rendering problems with sites such as simonwillison.net or theregister.co.uk
To restore a decent view of these sites you have to disable Core X Fonts in opera:config but I suspect this a dirty trick.
What a pity! In general font rendering in Opera is even better than in Firefox. And I have to admit that font rendering in Gutsy is simply splendid. I have Mac and Windows computers and I've never seen so beautiful fonts on screen. Of course you have to fine tune your font preferences...
