  1. Arduino is awesome, Simon! The bang/buck is there and it has a really nice code, deploy, test cycle but with hardware in addition to software.

  2. Ethernut is similar, with slightly larger hardware . Uses the AVR Atmega128, this allows ethernet. Programming is done in C. Using the Nut/OS framework, writing multithreaded apps such as small web servers to control relays etc. is reasonably easy.
