Lanyrd - the social conference directory. Nat and my new project, launched today and doing pretty well despite some early server hiccups. Sign in with Twitter to see conferences that your friends are speaking at, attending or tracking, then add your own events. We’re particularly keen on helping people build up a detailed profile of their previous talks, so adding older conferences is encouraged.

  1. Just got around to trying it. Wow, the twitter login thing is _great_ - a first time, never-used-this-before person still sees SO MUCH NICE STUFF. And I have a profile page! With a bio and a picture already! Lovely.

    Though I have a matt-jones-inspired dislike of the word 'friend' as used on the site. I follow these people on twitter. They're not my friends. Well, ok, some of them are.

    Pity I don't go to conferences any more..

  2. Hah, yes, I agree the friend terminology is a bit jarring. The problem is that unlike Dopplr, Twitter never actually came up with a good term for people-who-you-follow. "Follower" works fine for the other direction, but there's no guidance at all on what to call someone you are following other than the fact that the Twitter API calls them friends in a few places. So, we went with their terminology.

  3. Not sure we did have a word. It tends to be "people you share your trips with" and "people who share their trips with you" everywhere. In the object layer, they're called 'fellows' and (cough) 'befellows', leading to the wonderful method get_unmuted_befellowships.
