Re-mapping the future for Ordnance Survey - making public data public. “The Prime Minister and Communities Secretary John Denham will today announce that the public will have more access to Ordnance Survey maps from next year, as part of a Government drive to open up data to improve transparency.”

  1. Do we know what this really means in practice? Surely the Grauniad thing saying 1:10000 but not 1:25000 has got to be wrong (because, er, duh).
    And what does 'down to 1:10000' mean with vector data, anyway?

  2. Maps are drawn differently at different scales (e.g. position of text so it doesn't obscure features). So there is a different set of data for each published scale. My experience with OS data was quite a few years ago, but it may be that there is different coding for lines and point features at the different scales, which shows their non-digital heritage.
