As someone who works on an excepetionally "Getting Real" (for lack of a kinder expression) codebase, Peter is still wrong. You can't scale and make these kind of compromises.
Our pattern is more, smaller tables, more conditional loading logic, more flags, packed prefs, and constants (if photo.status = 47.12 then photo is pink kitten).
