Visualising Radio, pushing, not pulling. The BBC’s new radio player uses Comet over a Flash XMLsocket connection transport, with an ActiveMQ message queue behind the scenes. I’d like to know what server they’re using to broadcast out to the XMLsocket connections.

  1. Your feed just started showing lots of "????" in Google Reader (last two posts).

  2. That happens intermitently - for a day or two every few months - and I'm baffled as to why. I think it's actually a FeedBurner issue (since the problem fixes itself without my intervention) - it always happens with fancy quotes (the apostrophes in this post, the double quotes in the last one) which I serve up as UTF-8. The Atom feed I provide FeedBurner is UTF-8.

  3. Interesting. The problem is now fixed, even retroactively.

  4. Simon, we're using a scalable solution provided by http://www.monterosa.co.uk. Not sure what solution they're running (custom I suspect, with loads of kernel tweaking), but it's ec2'able.
