Canon EOS 450D / Digital Rebel XSi. Two weeks after a buy I EOS 400D. Sigh. It’s not out until April, but the big new features are a 3" LCD and "live view" mode. The kit lens now has image stabilisation.

  1. A bit annoying granted, but on first impression, the only thing it really has going for it over the 400D (IMHO) is the slightly bigger LCD... which isn't massively significant, and I'm sure it will be vastly more expensive that what you'd pay for a 400D.

  2. Wow. Utterly amazing specs. Hopefully they can produce that at the same price as the current 450D!

  3. Actually, I'd say the bigger LCD is one of the least significant additions. Top 4 for me are:

    - Cross sensor for central AF point
    - Better viewfinder
    - 14bit RAW
    - Better viewfinder info

  4. Missed one more:

    - Spot metering

  5. Bummer! I'm in the same boat as you with a new 400D. Doesn't look like there's much different that I'd personally get very excited about though. Certainly wouldn't have been enough to make me wait until April to get it.

  6. I have a 400D as well. I would feel silly holding it at arms length and using the "live view" LCD mode. That and the megapixel bump mostly look like "features" to draw in newbies to the DSLR market who are judging SLRs on the same basis that they used to use for point and shoot cameras. So don't worry about it. Learn to use your 400D properly and you won't really miss anything that the 450D has.

  7. The Live View can be surprisingly handy when the camera is in a position where you can't put your eye to the viewfinder. (Down on the ground, up in the air, ..) Plus I would imagine it would allow tethering to a computer with live update

  8. I wouldn't stress about it too much, they update this camera so frequently. I'm still pretty happy with my 350D.

The spot metering and larger viewfinder are the two really nice updates.

But I bet after you've had your 400D for a while you'll want to move up to a 40D/5D/1Ds MkII anyway :-)

  9. I'm mostly annoyed because I looked at the camera's history and said "it looks like they update it once every 18 months, so there'll probably be a new version pretty soon"... but got it anyway because we're about to go on a four week holiday to New Zealand. I wouldn't want to wait until April though.

  10. I was just about to purchase a 400D or an Olympus e510. Will wait until April now though! Brilliant Specs.

  11. No offense dude, but with the internet & google now a days. People who can't do something as simple as type in something as simple as 400D replacement and see that there hate been rumors since sept. If ton can't do that you are an idiot. It takes 2 seconds to do.

  12. "No offense dude..." - Love it! You know it's going to be harsh when it starts off with that line :)

As for me, I love the new features - DIGIC III, 14-bit, Live View, improved auto-focus, "Auto Lighting Optimizer", and... SD cards! Finally, Canon catches up with their point and shoots.

  13. To the "no offense dude" dude. At least use a spell checker and grammar checker before you post. Especially if you're intent on being rude.
