Reviews of the Pownce app on the iPhone app store on Flickr. I had to stitch together a screenshot because you can’t actually link to content in the App Store (unless you don’t care that people without iTunes won’t be able to follow your link). Three out of the four reviews complain about the OAuth browser authentication step, which is frustrating because Pownce have implemented it so well.

  1. But from the perspective of the user who knows nothing about the backend auth protocols, Pownce's app appears to be sloppily done. Think about it, there are many more apps that have the whole signin step completely integrated. Of course people are going to dislike this approach -- it's a poor user experience. Even if it is technically correct.

  2. Seems more like they were not happy with the app in general, and the OAuth was a thing to mention. Also mention that the "full" browser is used when a simple webkit frame may suffice : very true

  3. What if the application took a few sentences to explain why it was punting you off to Safari?

"We're going to send you over to WEBSITE to enter your password. Note that we will never directly ask you for your WEBSITE password, for your security! After you log in there, you'll automatically come back to THIS APPLICATION NAME."

And I agree with Stephen. While the Pownce app handled OAuth really well, it's a pretty sub-par app in all other respects. So maybe people were already inclined to complain, and the Safari punt was just another bullet point.

  4. The problem is that if your security gets in the way of user experience then you've lost because users will just choose a different, less secure, app. Having long explanatory messages because they either aren't read or aren't understood.

  5. Mark and jgraham have some good ideas here. There's a lot of room for improvement with this app.
