Using Time Machine across the network (via) Haven’t tried this tip yet, but apparently “defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1” lets Time Machine back up to a network drive.

  1. Cool, but you might want to read some of the cautionary notes in the comments of this post over at engadget before actually relying on Time Machine backups on unsupported volumes.

  2. I agree -- the very fact that this feature exists and is switched off in the final build suggests that Apple have tested it and found it is not reliable enough for backups yet.
