  1. They seem to be accepting any provider.

    Isn't it well understood that a bad provider can say "yep, this is she" to anything?

Yes, but that's fine - if your user picks one of those providers it's exactly equivalent to them deliberately sharing their username and password with other people (with www.bugmenot.com for example). If they're doing that, it means that you're doing something wrong by giving them a service that has no value to them. In the case of Basecamp and Highrise this shouldn't happen.
