I've never used Java, but nothing I've ever heard about it makes me want to start...

I'm currently bracing myself to get a bit more involved with Java (having not touched it since University) for two reasons: ActiveMQ and Solr. I don't think either will require me to write any code but I will need to get the JVM up and running on my virtual server.

I'm quite impressed with the functionality provided by Lucene. We're using it internally to search through PDF documents (had to add in the PDF document indexer) and it works perfectly.
