Two handy FireFox extensions

Just a quick plug for a couple of FireFox extensions I’ve been digging recently. Chris Pederick’s Web Developer toolbar / menu extension combines ideas from a whole bunch of other extensions and bookmarklets in to one extremely useful whole. The usual assortment of validation and element outlining options are present, but the really useful tools are “View Cookie Information” and “View Response Headers”. I’ve used separate extensions for these before but it’s handy to have them all in one package.

The second is something which really should be built in to every browser: Clear HTTP Auth, which lets you log out of HTTP authenticated sites without having to close all your browser windows.

This is Two handy FireFox extensions by Simon Willison, posted on 5th March 2004.

  1. My goodness it's been too long on the HTTP auth clearing. HTTP auth wouldn't be so bad if browsers weren't so badly designed with respect to it.

Why can't you clear HTTP auth with Javascript? Then at least we could have logout screens that contain a little code that clears the authentication, and it would easily fix one of the biggest problems with HTTP auth (though unfortunately only one of several problems).

  2. +1 to the developer toolbar, it really rocks. It's one of those tools that after you have it, you wonder how you ever got along without it. Just another reason to like FireFox too!

  7. The recently released Webdeveloper v0.7 toolbar incorporates the "Clear HTTP Auth" functionality and also EditCSS, among other changes.
