RSS vs Atom, condensed

Jeremy Zawodny:

Since everyone’s jumping up and down about the Atom vs. RSS (or “Google vs. RSS” if that’s your paranoia) debate, it’s probably worth pointing out that My Yahoo’s RSS module also groks Atom. It was added last night. It took about a half hour.

To borrow a phrase, it’s just data.

This is RSS vs Atom, condensed by Simon Willison, posted on 12th February 2004.

  2. This whole argument is just tiresome. I'm beginning to think it's just another excuse for Winer to whine.

  3. Scott, while I've indulged in it myself, I don't think personal attacks are helping the situation. Of course, I don't think the current frontpage of Scripting News is helping at all either :)

I don't see why people are worrying about evangelism. It's pretty simple: most aggregators will support Atom, and most weblogging software (or rather; the most widely deployed) will too. Atom's success is axiomatic. And, Atom's short term success does not depend on RSS's failure.

That said; anyone still using scriptingNews2.xml?

  4. Atom or RSS? Why not Atom and RSS? Antonio Cavedoni has a service (written in python) that converts Atom 0.3 feeds to RSS 1.0 ones. I used his code to create a similar service in PHP.
