CSS2 is five years old

No one appeared to notice, but the CSS2 Recommendation had its five year birthday on Monday the 12th of May. Maybe now people will stop writing it off as a new and unproven technology and start looking in to the benefits it can bring instead. Speaking of which, I’ve decided on the format for my CSS tutorial series and hope to kick things off with the first in the series tomorrow.

This is CSS2 is five years old by Simon Willison, posted on 15th May 2003.

  1. Well, I noticed. I admit it was a small mention in the middle of a larger post, mostly because the date snuck up on me and I hadn't anything really coherent to say. (Some would argue this is a permanent condition with me.)

  2. Well spotted Simon ... but presumably you also noticed the batch of new CSS3 recs that were posted just the other day?

  3. Yes. CSS 2 is five years old. We're moving on. Implementations of CSS 3 modules will soon be on your desk. But HTML 4 is **5 years and a half** old now. 4.01 only brought errata fixes. The only improvement in that time was the XMLization in xhtml 1.0. It will need another four years before xhtml 2.0 (that I totally dislike) will not be widely implemented if it is ever widely implemented. Where is innovation gone?

  4. Where is innovation gone

I think it may have dropped down the back of the sofa. I'll go rummage around for it.

  5. Hi, how can I work with pingbacks? I am a newbie...I guess I'm lost... Many thanxs Nelson

  6. There are a whole bunch of posts about pingback on this site, and the definitive reference for how it works is the Pingback 1.0 specification.

  7. Wow - CSS2 is five years old aready! I wonder when Internet Explorer will be updated so that it supports CSS2 more accurately. I heard some rumors that Internet Explorer will be renamed to "Windows XP", and the distinction between browser and operating system will be even less apparent. I don't know how true that rumor is, though.

  8. Thought that was forbidden to MS. They already tried to integrate Internet Explorer and Windows 98, but later it was forbidden or something like that. So i don't think they will try it again. I just hope MSIE7.x will come soon so people will upgrade. A that moment I think I will stop to support MSIE 5.x. /*ot: great content here!*/
