A plea for pings

Blogs I would read a lot more often if only they pinged weblogs.com when they updated:

Without pings, they languish at the bottom of my blogroll where I won’t notice or visit them. My blogroll is my only mechanism for keeping track of the blogs that I read regularly—aggregators just don’t do it for me, and with tabbed browsing my blogroll is almost as efficient for staying up to date.

It doesn’t have to be weblogs.com—a ping to blo.gs would be just as effective.

This is A plea for pings by Simon Willison, posted on 9th March 2003.

  1. Ok, you've given me the impetus to fix my code that pings weblogs.com. It's been broken, and I've been lazy in fixing it. Watch for my update :)

  3. I totally agree, man. Since I started using the blo.gs-powered blogroll, I rarely visit any site that's *not* on it.

  4. I do ping both weblogs.com and blo.gs for afongen, but some months back I started pinging as afongen.com/blog/ instead of just afongen.com (see http://blo.gs/?q=afongen). Not sure why I did it, perhaps it was a poor decision, but I made the change and am unlikely to make things worse by changing back. I could ping as both, but nah. Doesn't seem right. If you or someone has a better solution, I'm all ears. Sorry for the confusion, I thought I'd written you about it back in December. Guess not.

  5. I was having email problems around Christmas so I might have missed it. I've changed your entry in my blogroll now - thanks.

  6. Strange - in the years since I started using an aggregator, or some form of it, I can't imagine living without it. I might have to try it sometime to see...

  8. So... what about aggies doesn't do it for you? How can aggies solve your problem? Of course, if you've got a site, and a blogroll set up, and you don't care for aggie-specific features, then I'm not pointing a gun at your head. ;) Aggies are perhaps for the slightly less privelidged. :)

  9. And by the way, has anyone else noticed that m-w.com seems to now be pay-only?

  10. Hey Simon -- I *have* been pinging weblogs.com ever since Adrian asked me to about 2 weeks after I launched my redesign last October. Blogger does it for me automatically after I changed that setting. I've checked the last few times right after I posted, and Stopdesign always shows up on the weblogs.com list. I don't know how you grab the update time. But perhaps the problem is that Blogger sends a ping with http://www.stopdesign.com/log/ as the URL, instead of my top-level home page, which you use for the link?
