Excellent RSS tutorial

The RSS Tutorial for Content Publishers and Webmasters is a great read if you haven’t figured out the difference between RSS 0.9x (Really Simple Syndication), RSS 1.0 (RDF Site Summary) and RDF (a web standard for meta data which is used within RSS).

This is Excellent RSS tutorial by Simon Willison, posted on 7th September 2002.

  1. Well, it /was/ a great read on the differences, before 0.94/2.0. Now the differences are a bit simpler, and the choice is harder. Basically: Do you hate Dave Winer? Do you think the Semantic Web will arrive before your RSS feed dies? Is an elegant spec more important to you than an elegant file? You should use RSS 1.0. Otherwise, probably not.

  2. What will happen after the 0.9x branch hits 0.99? Two 1.0s? Or will they leap to 1.9x? :)

  3. For good or ill, unless Dave changes his mind in the next week or two, the final version in the 0.9x branch will be version 2.0: http://scriptingnews.userland.com/backissues/2002/ 09/06#theRoadToRss20

  4. I see. I had assumed 2.0 to be in the 1.0 branch. This gets confusing real fast.

  5. Why won't they just CHANGE the acronym to something else to differentiate the RSS kinds ? It just doesn't make sense to have different backgrounds for 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0. Who are they trying to confuse ? And ultimately, why won't these people just discuss a COMMON RSS format instead of pulling a Cartman and deciding to each work in their own playgrounds ?

  6. I think someone's going to have to write a pretty big FAQ to explain this lot once the RSS 2.0 spec goes live :/
