Wired Redesigns

Wired have redesigned, and now boast one of the snazziest CSS layouts on the web. The redesign is explained in A Site for Your Eyes, and has already drawn commentary from Jeffrey Zeldman and Mark Pilgrim (with plenty more certain to come). I think the title of Mark’s entry pretty much sums it up—this could well be the high profile redesign the web standards movement has been waiting for.

This is Wired Redesigns by Simon Willison, posted on 11th October 2002.

  1. what makes the layout so good for it to be one of the most 'snazzy' on the web?

  2. The fact that it's done with CSS and not tables. One of the most frequent complaints I get when trying to convince people to give CSS a go for layouts is "but CSS layouts are always so boring and all look the same". The reason for this is simple; CSS is still a relatively new idea for most web developers (despite being a 5 year old standard) and generally the only people churning out CSS layouts are coders and minimalists, not heavy weight designers. Wired is one of the first CSS layout sites to use a design that looks as complex and bulky as table sites normally do. It's a very impressive piece of work.

  3. gotcha. thanks simon. that's what i was thinking. it just didn't look particularly snazzy to me. just as complex and bulky as the tables version.
