Reasons not to use Access

I’ve never used MS Access for anything web related, and I certainly don’t intend to at any point in the future. however, I do see a lot of questions regarding Access on various forums and mailing lists. Nine Reasons NOT To Use MS Access To Power A DB-Driven Website (published 29th June 2002) is an excellent article explaining exactly why using Access on the web is a really bad idea.

  1. Interesting. I recently was asked if I could design a database for someone with the proviso being it has be MS Access. I baulked, but Stuart pointed out that there is no reason not to use Access if the database is small and performance is not an issue. For the customer in question, there was no reason not to use Access, and in fact, none of the nine reasons in that article applies either. I'm not saying that MS Access is a good database, but it does have its uses.

  2. nice article -- one or two of the reasons actually stand up to scrutiny the author's micro$oft sql/server .net biases aren't very well hidden, though
