I was shocked to see no mention of Shell Oil, a company I still have an unbelievably strong (and entirely irrational) emotional attachment to due to years of Lego indoctrination. The striking look of the Raymond Leowy designed logo probably helps too.
Googling turns up this page which suggests Shell was phased out in favour of the fictional Octan in 1992:

Annoyingly I can't seem to comment on the original post. If i could this is what I would have said...
Lego trains used to come with various different national railway logos. I remember Deutsche Bahnhof, SNCF and british rail.
