Using Graphics Card Memory as Swap (via) Interesting idea: “Graphic cards contain a lot of very fast RAM, typically between 64 and 512 MB. With Linux, it’s possible to use it as swap space, or even as RAM disk.”

  1. But the cost per MB of video memory is INCREDIBLY high, and access to it is limited by the bus to which the card is attached. You'd be better off buying more main memory. This is yet another stupid Linux trick. Like packet networking over floppy disks.

  2. I don't feel that this is a 'stupid' Linux trick, rather a neat Linux trick. While it does seem rather silly to do, it is still neat. Think of it as buying a really fast car. How often are you going to drive it 'really fast'? It's cool because you CAN drive 'really fast'.
