The LA Times have built a number of Django projects, half a dozen of which are listed over at DjangoSites:

There is a growing trend for newspapers to use Django for quick one-off projects which is awesome - NY Times have used it recently for their 'Represent' application and I'm sure there are others we're not yet aware of. It's neat to see the bigger papers making use of technology such as Django.
Ben Welsh, who's quoted in the Poynter article, was on the "Django in Journalism" panel at DjangoCon talking about some of the work he does at LA Times.
