Simon Willison’s Weblog

For some reason, in their story on the study, the Times had an ax to grind with Google. Our work has nothing to do with Google. Our focus was exclusively on the Web overall, and we found that it takes on average about 20 milligrams of CO2 per second to visit a Web site.

  1. That was a pretty slimy hack job by the Sunday Times. I think the real work by Alex Wissner-Gross is valuable, but the Sunday Times by spreading their lie that a web search "produces more CO2 than it takes to boil a teakettle" has created an urban legend that damages people's environmental literacy.

I know that I will have to deal with people spouting that factoid for years!
