Talks: Jazz up your JavaScript! Unobtrusive scripting with JavaScript libraries

Webstock 2008, Wellington, New Zealand, 11th-15th February 2008

JavaScript used to be the ugly duckling of the Web standards triangle: unwieldy, inaccessible and notoriously hard to get working cross-browser. Two factors have combined to improve JavaScript's reputation: the rise of unobtrusive scripting and the creation of JavaScript libraries to smooth over the bumps in the language and implementations.

The first section of this workshop will discuss the unobtrusive scripting mind-set and the challenges and opportunities it introduces. The second section will compare the popular libraries available today, and the final section will focus on the jQuery library, showing how you can use it to produce impressive unobtrusive scripts with less effort, all without compromising your principles.

Participants are expected to have basic knowledge of JavaScript, but advanced experience is not required. While a laptop is not required, some of the examples will be well suited to following along during the presentation.
