There is a hidden preference accessible via TinkerTool that adds a "Quit Finder" option to its application menu. This way when you need to hide the desktop and all your finder windows, simply hitting Cmd-Q will suffice.
Getting the desktop back is a simple matter of clicking the Finder icon in the dock.
